Learning to Rest...

I am not great at resting. I don't get 8 hours of sleep a night, I chase a toddler around, I work, I write, I go to the gym, I cook for my family, and the list goes on and on and on. I don't ever sit down and do nothing. When I do, I tend to knit, which isn't always relaxing!

We need to rest...our bodies need us to rest, but it is one thing we don't often do. When I heard about Yoga Nidra, my interest was piqued. People said they felt like they'd had hours of sleep--after a 45 minute class! I can do something healthy AND feel rested? That's what I've been waiting to hear!

Karen Brody's book, Daring to Rest: A 40 Day Program for Women, has started me on my journey to learning to relax while also learning more about yoga and meditation and how it affects my body. This isn't just a book about rest and yoga though, it's about learning more from your mind to learn fully what your purpose is and even how to get rid of physical exhaustion to reach your goals.

I have always been of the mind that staying busy is helping me reach my goals, but one thing I'm not always doing is thinking and Yoga Nidra encourages you to THINK and one thing that I love...to journal. I've started this experiment by making a note in my Passion Planner after each session.

A few things that have made this all the more interesting to me:

-I don't always have time to read, but this is an easy book that you can read a few pages of before bed--if you're like me and forget where you left off or have a hard time jumping back in, there are tidy key points at the end of each chapter.

-I loved the chapter on Wisdom. I think it's helpful to step back and observe what you're doing in your life, take time to reflect and embrace your challenges and this chapter tells you why this is important and how to do it!

-This encourages journaling, something I always try to start off the year doing and get out of the habit of doing--this time, I've stuck with it more as a part of my reflection.
